If the American experiment finally decides to call it quits, how might a national breakup begin? Or Texas rebels when disputes over abortion laws grow deadly and the state’s National Guard remains loyal to the second Texan republic. These scenarios are not of my own creation; they all appear in recent nonfiction books warning of an American schism. We never learn exactly who or what started the new American civil war, or what ideologies, if any, are competing for power.

CNN —The Republican-controlled Arizona House of Representatives once again failed to advance a repeal of the state’s 160-year-old abortion ban Wednesday, days after the state Supreme Court roiled state politics by reviving the law. On Wednesday, following two attempts to discuss a bill that would repeal Arizona’s 1864 ban on abortions, lawmakers voted not to discuss the measure on the House floor. State lawmakers last week ended a House session early to block an effort to repeal the abortion ban. And on Monday, House Republicans’ general counsel laid out a strategy to defeat or dilute the impact of a potential abortion rights ballot initiative in a leaked memo. (AP) — A federal judge on Wednesday permanently banned a Florida gun retailer from selling or delivering certain gun parts in New York that officials say can be used to assemble untraceable ghost guns and sold without background checks. It also found that the retailer made at least $3.9 million in illegal profits and would likely continue to violate local, state, and federal laws. CNN —Nikki Haley’s presidential campaign has for weeks been looking ahead to the Republican primary in South Carolina, her home state where she was twice elected governor. The primary in South Carolina is open, meaning Democrats and independents can cast ballots in the GOP race. The former president does not need to open a larger tent in order to win in South Carolina. Republican Kris Kobach’s action was his latest move to restrict transgender rights, following his successful efforts last year to temporarily block Democratic Gov.
